A Salt Lake City singer-songwriter plans to bring dozens of indie bands to Main Street in January for a weeklong festival that he sees as someday becoming an important destination for talent scouts, an event that could bring thousands of more people to Park City and keep Main Street buzzing in the week before the opening of the Sundance Film Festival.

The Orion Independent Music Festival, which will debut in 2010, is scheduled to run from Jan. 14 until Jan. 20 at various restaurants and nightclubs on Main Street as well as at venues in Salt Lake City. It ends the day before Sundance opens, meaning that the entire second half of January could be dominated by festival-goers of some sort.

Steffon Olsen, the founder and CEO of The Orion, said in an interview rock 'n' roll, pop, folk, jazz and hip hop artists will be in the lineup. He said there will be a minimum of 60 performers at the festival. Meanwhile, he expects music-industry talent scouts and representatives from independent music labels will travel to Park City for the festival looking for artists to sign. He expects 20 labels to send people to the festival.

"We're going for exactly what Sundance does for filmmakers," Olsen said.

He said some local acts will be on the roster of performers, saying that he is "absolutely very impressed" with the support Park City acts receive. He said "at least one big name" of national stature will attend The Orion, but it was not clear if that person or act would perform or be brought in to mingle with the other musicians.
